What is Trooping the Colour 1

History  of Trooping The Colour

Trooping the Colour is a ceremony performed by regiments of the British and Commonwealth armies. It has been a tradition of British infantry regiments since the 17th century, although its roots go back much earlier. On the battlefield, a regiment’s colours, or flags, were used as rallying points.

Today the ceremony is performed by regiments of the household division to celebrate the Queens official birthday, which is celebrated on the 2nd Saturday in June.

Up to 1500 elite soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians come together each June in a great display of military precision, horsemanship and fanfare to mark The Queen’s Official Birthday.

The streets are lined with soldiers and crowds waving flags as the parade moves from Buckingham Palace and down The Mall to Horse Guard’s Parade, alongside Members of the Royal Family on horseback and in carriages.

The display closes with an RAF fly-past, watched by Members of the Royal Family from the balcony at Buckingham Palace.

Precision movements will accompany precise planning for the ceremony of trooping the colour, the queen will arrive at precisely 11am to undertake the review of her guards and cavalry.

Once The Queen has arrived at Horse Guard’s Parade in Whitehall, she is greeted by a Royal salute and carries out an inspection of the troops, who are fully trained and operational soldiers wearing the ceremonial uniform of red tunics and bearskin hats.

The Colour of the regiment who are trooping will be marched in front of the attending troops as a symbol of bygone days where all soldiers recognised there respective Regimental Colours and would rally around them in battle especially in times of confusion and the disorientation of battle.

Many of the Royal family will attend on horseback with the queen and duke of Edinburgh travelling in a open-top carriage.  Both the queen and the Duke previously travelled on horseback, but in recent years both have used alternative transport from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards.

After the military bands have performed, the escorted Regimental Colour, or flag, is processed down the ranks of soldiers. Over one hundred words of command are used by the Officer in Command of the Parade to direct the several hundred soldiers.

Once the Foot Guards have marched past The Queen, she rides back to Buckingham Palace at the head of the soldiers, before taking the salute again at the Palace from a dais.

Her Majesty is then joined by other Members of the Royal Family on the balcony at Buckingham Palace to watch a fly-past by the Royal Air Force. A 41-gun salute is also fired in Green Park to mark the occasion.
